RAISE: Tele-Rehabilitation for Patients in Remote and Rural Areas

The company VIDAVO is making a significant contribution to the RAISE project, an innovative initiative for developing and implementing tele-rehabilitation solutions for patients residing in remote or isolated regions. The RAISE project is coordinated by the National Center for Research and Technology Development (CERTH) and supported by notable partners, including Televes, IBV, Inesctec, and the University of Ioannina.

The primary objective of RAISE is to provide pioneering rehabilitation solutions, ensuring that patients with chronic conditions—such as COPD, acquired brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, and fractures—have access to continuous care that improves their quality of life.

The Vida24 System and the Patient App

The Vida24 system, particularly the Patient App—which has been fully optimized for tablet use—integrates into RAISE’s digital ecosystem for remote rehabilitation. This application enables patients to track their progress and engage in real-time communication with caregivers and healthcare professionals. In addition, the app promotes self-management and personalized care, providing patients with safe, easy daily health management options. Using tablets and advanced equipment like blood pressure monitors, oximeters, scales, and smartwatches, both doctors and patients can manage rehabilitation remotely with security and reliability.

Project Partners

The primary partners in the RAISE project include Televes, CERTH, VIDAVO, IBV, Inesctec, and the University of Ioannina (UoI).

RAISE and the ROSIA PCP Program

Under the Horizon 2020 program and as part of ROSIA PCP, RAISE targets the development of advanced tele-rehabilitation solutions that address the needs of patients in remote regions where healthcare services are limited. These solutions focus on enhancing patient self-management and remote care by providing tools and frameworks for ongoing rehabilitation in patients' own environments.

Key Components of the RAISE Project:

  1. Remote Rehabilitation Ecosystem: A central, open platform for connecting patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals remotely. This platform supports clinical monitoring, collaborative care planning, and management of the overall rehabilitation plan.
  2. Personalization with Artificial Intelligence (AI): The RAISE platform leverages AI and machine learning algorithms to tailor rehabilitation programs and predict health outcomes based on patient data.
  3. Data-Driven Solutions: The platform integrates data from wearable medical devices and geographical and environmental data to personalize care and shape effective rehabilitation pathways.
  4. Self-Management Support: Digital tools encourage greater patient engagement in managing chronic conditions and adhering to treatment plans, empowering both patients and their caregivers.
  5. Accessibility and Scalability: RAISE aims to overcome geographic and financial barriers to deliver cost-effective rehabilitation solutions, improving patients' quality of life and reducing healthcare costs.

Project Phases

The development of RAISE unfolds in three main phases:

  • Phase 1: Solution Design and Definition: In the first phase, the foundational structure of the solution was designed, and patient needs were analyzed.
  • Phase 2: Prototyping, Implementation, and System Integration: During this phase, the prototype system was developed and integrated into the rehabilitation ecosystem.
  • Phase 3: Application and Evaluation: Now entering the third phase, pilot applications are being conducted at three sites across Europe: the Coimbra University Hospital in Portugal, the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dublin, Ireland, and the Hospital Clinico Universitario in Zaragoza, Spain. These pilots, expected to last for 10 months, will provide valuable data and feedback for the final evaluation of the solution.

VIDAVO’s Role in RAISE

VIDAVO is supplying the Vida24 system as a tele-rehabilitation tool integrated into the RAISE ecosystem. As part of the project, 70 tablets and portable medical devices such as blood pressure monitors, oximeters, scales, and smartwatches have been allocated for distribution to patients and doctors in the pilot locations. Additionally, the Patient App has been adapted for full functionality on tablets, ensuring maximum performance and accessibility for all users.

By combining cutting-edge technology, the expertise of its partners, and end-user involvement, the RAISE project aims to deliver a comprehensive tele-rehabilitation solution that makes a tangible impact on the daily lives of patients in remote and rural areas.
